Also it's good idea to make some essential steps as a precaution before upgrading. I'd better decide my self when I'm ready and when it's right time to upgrade.

I think it's pointless to complain that 32-bit apps stopped working with Catalina, that was announced so much in advance already.Īnother good question is, "Did your system performed well before upgrading to Catalina?" If not, then do not complain that you still have the problems after the upgrade, they were probably not caused by upgrading to Catalina and you cannot expect them to be solved just by upgrade it self.Īlso, I would probably never let my Macs make at least these big upgrades, automatically. May be they were too lazy to do the upgrade. Probably some people are having troubles with Catalina, but may be because they didn't get ready for an upgrade properly and they didn't know what to expect. Also I had to log back in to App Store, Books and Music AppleID account, but I guess that's no big deal.) After the upgrade Catalina logged me back in my iCloud account automatically (I only had to confirm agreement with new conditions. Fusion Drive System/Data volumes split went ok, exactly as specified in new Catalina APFS scheme changes. Upgrade took 30 min and everything went smooth.ĭespite some people complaining about troubles after upgrading to Catalina, in my case I didn't realize anything wrong, so far. So today I can confirm that my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) with 2TB Fusion Drive I have upgraded from latest Mojave version to initial version of Catalina 10.15 with No Problems. So if there is anyone around who can confirm that Upgrade from Mojave to Catalina with system on Fusion Drive works OK, that would be really valuable information here. Also it can Upgrade it self with system on single physical hard drive (or SSD), where simply no Fusion is involved.Īs I said already that behavior is related to Parallels Desktop Virtual Machine, not to the real one, but from what I see I'm afraid to try an upgrade on real iMac with Fusion Drive and risk destruction of everything installed in currently running Mojave with clean re-installation of Catalina from the scratch as the only solution. So finally the problem is, that at least for me Catalina cannot Upgrade it self with system on Fusion Drive! But it can make fresh (clean) installation on Fusion Drive with no problem. New installation is not using the previous "Macintosh HD - Data" on disk2s1 at all so I just got rid of that with simply deleting that APFS volume. What I've got then after extra, were two volumes of "Macintosh HD - Data" one from before on disk2s1 and new one on disk2s5 (where was "Macintosh HD" before) and "Macintosh HD" (System) moved to disk2s6. I have used Disk Utility in Recovery mode to Erase both "Macintosh HD" and "Macintosh HD - Data" and after that I run Catalina installation again and it went through with no complaints. One more update: Finally I was able to fix the above issue, unfortunately not the way I like. Thanks for any inputs, thoughts, suggestions. I really don't wanna render these machines un-bootable being stacked somewhere in an upgrade cycle.

I know Virtual Machine is not the same thing as real one but I'm now really afraid to proceed with an upgrade on my Late 2015 iMac with 2TB Fusion Drive inside or my Mac Mini also with Fusion Drive in.

#Upgrade from mojave to catalina pro
I have upgraded my MacBook Pro to Catalina already, everything went fine and I don't see any major issues. I have also tried the same upgrade for virtual machine with latest Mojave installed upgrading to Catalina on 'more standard' single hard drive configuration and that worked fine. but after few mins same window comes up again. Than I started upgrade from Catalina installer 'USB', everything went well from beginning, but after couple restarts I've got unfortunate message:ĭoesn't matter how many times I click 'Restart', installation starts again saying like 22 mins left. I made virtual machine in exactly same conditions with two Hard Drives combined in APFS Fusion with latest version of Mojave installed.

Update: I'm asking because I have tried in Parallels Desktop.
